About him
Okay, so… not your normal profile statement. While I appreciate all the pleasantries of Sunday lunches at the pub, afternoon strolls, and cosy evenings in; they’re not, in my opinion, the best way to spend what should be, the best years of our lives.
But rather to spend more of that time travelling, not commercially but adventurous and challenging travel that leaves a lasting imprint. In February, I travelled south to north across Vietnam, from congested cities to mountaintop villages. I jumped off rocks into subterranean lakes deep inside caves. In August, I travelled across Namibia by motorcycle; I rode through Safari parks and looked over my shoulder to see a Rhino, less than 10 metres away, running alongside me.
In October, I will travel across Spain to Morocco. I’ll ride along the coast there, visiting Rabat and Casablanca before coming inland to Marrakesh. Then, I will travel to the Atlas Mountains, spend a night under the stars in a Bedouin tent before pushing on to Fez, and then return home across Spain to Bilbao.
Adventurous travel is challenging and can be risky, even dangerous at times. But surely, nothing is more dangerous than sitting on a sofa in front of a TV watching reality shows. Inevitably, before you know it, the only thing that changes is your sofa, for one in a care home. Would you instead change your comfortable sofa for hard rock on a mountainside overlooking a vast African plain with a glowing sunset on the horizon? Or your walk-in shower for an ice-cold morning dip in a mountain stream fed by snow high in the Alps? Or to hear, in your later years, the excitement in your grandchildren as they exclaim, ‘Grandma! Tell us about the time….’ Next year, I’m lucky enough to be travelling across vast regions of Mongolia, and later, with any luck, I’ll be crossing the mountains in Nepal and, hopefully, many more.
